My Favorite Film Stock — Cinestill 800T at EI 1600

After thinking for a while about what to write for my first journal entry, I decided to talk about something I’ve been really into lately: shooting film, and some of my own preferences and thoughts around it.

Most of the time when I shoot film, I reach for Cinestill 800T. Whether my way of using it is technically “right” or not is another story, but the reason I choose it is pretty simple. I love the halation that 800T creates. There’s something unique about it that, for me, is really hard to recreate in an edit.

But when I shoot this film normally, I often find the results a little too clean and beautiful for my taste. So I started experimenting with different ways of shooting it.

Eventually, I found a method that gives me what I’m looking for: more visible grain and stronger contrast. I shoot Cinestill 800T at EI 1600 and have it push-processed by one stop.

Whenever I use this film, I usually meter at EI 1600, whether I’m shooting on a sunny day or on a rainy night. I also shoot without any filters. After developing and scanning, I often adjust the color temperature in Adobe Lightroom, especially with images shot outside during the daytime.

Shooting this way gives me noticeably more grain than usual, and I really like that. Somehow, that roughness feels connected to my own emotions and sense of nostalgia. It’s less about getting a perfectly clean image and more about creating something that feels closer to a memory.

If you’re thinking about getting into film photography, or if you already shoot film but feel like things are becoming a little repetitive, I’d recommend trying Cinestill 800T at EI 1600 with a +1 push.

最初のJournalに何を書こうかしばらく考えた結果、今日は最近僕がハマっているフィルム写真について、自分なりの好みや考えを書いてみようと思います。

僕がフィルムで写真を撮るときは、ほとんどの場合Cinestill 800Tを選びます。この使い方が技術的に「正しい」かどうかは別として、僕がこのフィルムを選ぶ理由はとても単純です。800Tが生み出すハレーションが好きだからです。僕にとって、あの独特な表現は編集ではなかなか再現できないものがあります。

ただ、このフィルムを普通に撮影すると、僕の好みとしては少し綺麗すぎる仕上がりになることがあります。そこで、いろいろな撮り方を試すようになりました。

そして最終的にたどり着いたのが、Cinestill 800TをEI 1600で撮影し、+1段の増感現像をする方法です。僕が求めていた、より強く見える粒子感とコントラストを得られるようになりました。

このフィルムを使うときは、晴れた日中でも雨の夜でも、基本的にEI 1600で露出を測ります。フィルターも使いません。現像とスキャンをした後、Adobe Lightroomで色温度を調整することも多く、特に日中の屋外で撮影した写真は、ほとんどの場合あとから色温度を整えています。

この方法で撮影すると、通常よりもGrainがはっきりと現れます。そして僕は、その質感がとても好きです。その少し荒々しい質感が、どこか自分自身の感情やノスタルジアと結びついているように感じます。

完璧に綺麗な写真を作るというよりも、記憶に近い何かを残す。

僕にとっては、そんな感覚があります。

もしこれからフィルム写真を始めてみたい人や、すでにフィルムで撮影しているけれど少しマンネリを感じている人がいたら、Cinestill 800TをEI 1600で撮影し、+1段の増感現像をする方法を一度試してみるのも面白いと思います。
