Schusei is a Japanese photographer, filmmaker, and electronic musician whose work is rooted in atmosphere, memory, human experience, and a deep sense of place.

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, he moved to Tokyo at twenty and spent years as a professional inline skater before finding his way into television, filmmaking, photography, and electronic music. What may seem like different paths have always been connected — by movement and rhythm, by sound and observation, and by an instinctive curiosity for the world around him.

After leaving Japan, he spent time living across several countries before finding his way to Berlin.

Berlin eventually became home. For more than a decade, Schusei observed and documented the city not as a destination, but as a place being lived — its people, streets, changing light, ordinary moments, and the subtle atmosphere found between them.

He later returned to Japan, where he is now based.

His work has been shaped by street culture, music, literature, personal experience, and the places he has called home. Photography, film, sound, and words are not separate practices to him, but different ways of exploring the same question:

What did it feel like to be there?

His work seeks to leave something with you. A memory. A sense of nostalgia. Uneasiness. Joy. Perhaps a little hope.

His work is an attempt to preserve something that cannot quite be held onto — the atmosphere of a place, the feeling of a moment, the quiet traces of a life being lived.

Not simply how it looked, but how it felt to live through it.
